In Starcraft, there's the campaign missions. As you play more of them, you'll be introduced to more technology to make better units. Now when you play multiplayer on a melee or something, you have everything, you just need to build the correct requirement. But imagine if you needed to play the whole campaign to get those units, and you didn't and went to play a multiplayer game. You'd be limited to those units unlocked.
